October 2015 Pepper & Juno in a TV-less World : Artistry
Three years ago, artist Pepper See invented a game for her daughter. Pepper needed to catch up on sleep but Juno, then five, wanted to play. The disappointed little girl threw herself to the floor in a fit of tears, so Pepper distracted her with a challenge - to paint a background on a blank canvas with the promise that after she woke up Pepper would paint something over Juno’s background. The result, a whimsical portrait of Juno throwing a tantrum over a resplendent landscape, inspired a creative collaboration that forms the basis for this show.
Pepper & Juno in a TV-less World sees Juno challenging and inspiring her mother with more exuberant backgrounds. Pepper’s portraiture over top springs from her fascination with emotion and expression, things she learned to pull from subjects during her career in photography and media production.
Pepper & Juno in a TV-less World is her first solo show, a distinction she is happy to share with her eight year old daughter, Juno Tay.
